About:
The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker sections of the society and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, The Chief Justice of India is the Patron-in-Chief, NALSA.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Vikram Nath, Judge of the Supreme Court of India is the Executive Chairman of NALSA.
NALSA is housed at Supreme Court of India, Tilak Marg, New Delhi – 110001. The NALSA Centre for Citizen Services is set up at Jaisalmer House | 26 Man Singh Road, New Delhi-110011. It is working during office hours on all working days.
In every State, State Legal Services Authority has been constituted to give effect to the policies and directions of the NALSA and to give free legal services assistance to the people and conduct Lok Adalats in the State. The State Legal Services Authority is headed by Hon’ble the Chief Justice of the respective High Court who is the Patron-in-Chief of the State Legal Services Authority. The Seniormost Judge of the High Court is nominated as Executive Chairman, SLSA.
In every District, District Legal Services Authority has been constituted to implement Legal Services Programmes in the District. The District Legal Services Authority is situated in the District Courts Complex in every District and chaired by the District Judge of the respective District. A Judicial Officer of Civil Judge Cadre is appointed as Secretary on full time basis.

Qualification:
- Under Secretary
Deputation: Officers under the Central Government or the State Government or Union Territories or autonomous bodies or statutory bodies:-
a. i) holding analogous posts on a regular basis in the Parent cadre/department; OR a
ii) with six years’ service in the grade rendered after appointment thereto on regular basis in Level-8 (Rs.47600-151100) in the Pay Matrix or equivalent in the parent cadre/Department; and
b) possessing the educational qualifications and experience as mentioned below:
Essential:
i. Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized University or Institute; AND
ii. Possessing five years’ of experience in handling administrative, financial and parliamentary matters.
Desirable: i. Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized University of Institution.
- Assistant Legal Aid Advisor
Deputation: Officers under the Central Government or the State Government or Union Territories or autonomous bodies or statutory bodies:-
a) i) holding analogous posts on a regular basis in the Parent cadre; OR
ii) with five years’ service in the grade rendered after appointment thereto on a regular basis in Level-10 (Rs.56100-177500)/ Level-9 (Rs.53100-167800) in the Pay Matrix or equivalent in the parent cadre/Department; OR in a with six years’ service the grade rendered after appointment thereto on regular basis in Level-8 (Rs.47600-151100) in the Pay Matrix or equivalent in the parent cadre/Department; AND
b) possessing the educational qualifications and experience as mentioned below:
Essential:
i. Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized University or Institution and three years’ experience in Legal matters in Central or State Government or Union Territory administrations or public sector undertakings or autonomous body or statutory body or recognized research institute; OR
ii. Master’s Degree in Law from a recognized University or Institution and one years’ experience in Legal matters in Central or State Government or Union Territory administrations or public sector undertakings or autonomous body or statutory body or recognized research institute.
- Superintendent- Legal
Deputation: Officers under the Central Government or the State Government or Union Territories or autonomous bodies or statutory bodies:-
a) i) holding analogous posts on a regular basis in the Parent cadre; OR with two years’ service in the grade rendered after appointment thereto on a regular basis in posts in Level-7 (Rs.44900-142400) in the Pay Matrix or equivalent in the parent cadre or department; OR
iii) with six years’ service in the grade rendered after appointment thereto on a regular basis in posts in Level-6 (Rs.35400-112400) in the Pay Matrix or equivalent in the parent cadre or department; AND b) possessing the educational qualifications and experience as mentioned below:
Essential: i. Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized University or Institution and three years’ experience in Legal matters in Central or State Government or Union Territory administrations or public sector undertakings or autonomous body or statutory body or recognized research institute. Desirable: Knowledge of administrative / establishment or court matters
- Assistant – Legal
Deputation: Officers under the Central Government or the State Government or Union Territories or autonomous bodies or statutory bodies:-
a) i) holding analogous posts on a regular basis in the Parent cadre; OR
ii) with five years’ service in the grade rendered after appointment thereto on a regular basis in posts in Level-6 (Rs.35,400-1,12,400) in the Pay Matrix or equivalent in the parent cadre/ Department; AND
b) possessing the educational qualifications and experiencе as mentioned below:
Essential:
i. Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized University or Institution; AND
ii. Two years’ experience in Legal matters in Central or State Government or Union Territory administrations or public sector undertakings or autonomous body or statutory body.
