Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
- At least four (4) years of practice in an established law firm’s dispute resolution or transactional department.
- Experience in international arbitration and ADR.
- Overall broad knowledge of U.S. law, including litigation, labor law, IP, etc.
- Ability to provide competent legal advice and counsel on various U.S. legal and policy issues.
- Background in international affairs, international trade, international law, or other related areas.
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
- Excellent communication skills in English and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Proficient understanding of business sensitivities and confidentiality.
- Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills.
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Legal Affairs will be responsible for (1) managing USCIB’s Arbitration Committee and leading USCIB’s work to expand U.S. awareness and use of ICC’s dispute resolution services; (2) providing general legal counsel to the organization when necessary; and (3) supporting the Intellectual Property (IP) Committee as needed.
Managing USCIB’s Arbitration Committee:
• Work closely with the Chair of the Arbitration Committee to oversee the fifteen (15) Arbitration Subcommittees and the initiatives of its Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which includes three working groups; working with the subcommittees to organize outreach to companies, firms, law schools, and institutions, and develop seminars, corporate counsel roundtables, luncheons, and conferences around the United States and abroad.
• Arrange, manage, and prepare for the Arbitration Committee’s quarterly leadership meetings and annual membership meetings.
• Direct all aspects of the Arbitration Committee’s communications, including its announcements, webpages, Neutrals Databases, intranet site, contacts lists, news, press releases, blogs, and social media postings, and answer questions from users and members about the Arbitration Committee’s activities and ICC dispute resolution generally.
• Manage membership of USCIB’s Nominations Commission; coordinate that Commission’s nomination of U.S. neutrals to serve in ICC cases; and prepare quarterly and annual reports on the Commission’s activities.
• Oversee U.S. membership on the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR; organize bi-annual calls and meetings with the group; collate members’ responses to draft Commission reports and papers; coordinate with members on Commission’s different task forces; facilitate members’ task force proposals to the Commission; attend main Commission meetings, and provide USCIB’s views on issues where needed.
• Liaise with USCIB’s membership and business development departments to support and retain members of the Arbitration Committee and USCIB’s legal community membership.
• Coordinate with the Secretariat of the ICC International Court of Arbitration for North America (SICANA) to, among other things, organize and promote U.S.-based ICC arbitration events and activities and engage with USCIB member companies about ICC dispute resolution services (e.g., organize meetings/roundtables).
• Present at events about international dispute resolution around the country and abroad, and write about ICC dispute resolution and USCIB’s Arbitration Committee activities.
Providing general legal counsel:
• Provide legal advice and counsel to USCIB’s leadership and staff on various legal issues, including contract clauses and employment matters.
• Reviews contracts and other legal documents; research legal issues and recommend revisions, as necessary.
• Examine and create draft agreements on various legal issues, including confidentiality, limitation of liability, as well as consultant and vendor agreements.
• Manage requests for USCIB to participate in amicus filings on issues relevant to USCIB’s members; assist in drafting and reviewing the briefs; and prepare releases about the decisions.
• Serve as a contact person for any reports of sexual harassment and whistleblower complaints.
• Work on special internal legal projects as needed.
Supporting USCIB’s Intellectual Property (IP) Committee:
• Desirable to assist the IP Committee in promoting a robust and effective intellectual property framework worldwide that is conducive to U.S. private sector innovation and its deployment, in the context of global trade and investment.
• Able to consult with other Committees on IP-related issues that may arise, for example with respect to AI in connection with international policy relating to AI generated content and its ownership
