Justice and Home Affair Adviser
Qualifications:
- Degree level qualification in a relevant discipline (strong preference for Politics, International Relations or Law).
- Strong understanding of the functioning of the executive, parliament and judiciary in India. Excellent knowledge of Indian politics and justice and home affairs.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with prior professional experience of researching and drafting written reports and/or advice for senior officials or executives. Minimum experience two years.
- A passion for developing a deep expertise in the Justice and Home Affairs sector both in India and in the UK.
Responsibilities:
- Provide crucial support to the First Secretary JHA to deliver an increasing range of top priority projects from across the Home Office portfolio, including Criminal Justice Cooperation, Mobility & Migration, Countering Extremism and Protecting the Vulnerable. This will require taking the lead on a number of policy areas and projects.
- Lead on the provision of specialist support, advice and reporting on developments in the Justice sector, including on complex criminal justice issues as extradition.
- Lead a number of policy files and projects. This will require innovative thought and the ability to situate solutions within the broader strategic framework. These areas will develop over time but are likely to begin with leadership of a project under the UK-India Mobility and Migration Partnership and two scoping studies related to protecting vulnerable people.
- Lead on providing high quality reports and records from meetings with external stakeholders, workshops and political developments both at Union and State level.
- Leadership of the delivery of JHA projects, including managing reporting on progress and in some instances managing budgets.
- Research, monitor and report on JHA developments in India for audiences in London on a regular basis. These reports will provide insight and guidance on risks and opportunities to colleagues both in the British High Commission; the wider India network; and, back in the UK.
- Develop strong expertise and personal networks in the JHA area.
- Represent the JHA team at external meetings, conferences and workshops where appropriate.
