Legal Officer
Location:
Office of the Prosecutor (The Hague Branch) of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals
Qualification:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in international criminal law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. Two (2) years or more of experience in investigating and locating international fugitives is required. Experience with UN International Criminal Tribunals is desirable.
Responsibilities:
Within delegated authority, the Legal Officer may be responsible for the following duties
• Handles a range of issues related to international criminal law.
• Conducts extensive legal research and analysis and prepare studies, comparative studies, briefs, reports and correspondence.
• Undertakes basic or extensive review of legal documents, instruments, or other material; identifies important issues, similarities, and inconsistencies, etc.
• Prepares or assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts and commentaries on those texts, teaching materials in the field of international trade law and private international law, etc.
• Reviews, advises on and drafts legal motions/submissions.
• Assesses evidence for relevance and admissibility.
• Prepares and assesses briefs of evidence.
• Services or assists senior colleagues in servicing diplomatic conferences, commissions, committees, task forces, expert groups and other bodies, including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, meeting reports, etc.
• Administers programmes of legal technical assistance.
• Provides guidance to more junior staff.
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
