LLM or Legum Magistere is a Master’s degree in Law. The LL.M. Course, is intended to produce Academicians and Lawyers of competence and expertise, as it is imperative that the students should have an in-depth knowledge not only of the Concepts and basic Principles of law, but also of Social, Political and Economic aspects of law, as well as dynamics of law.
Apart from National Law Universities, there are world class traditional universities in India such as Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Jamia Millia Islamia and others also which offer 2 year LLM courses. LLM courses offered by these universities are generally preferred by those who do not want to spend a huge chunk of money in pursuing their LLM and wish to do a 2 year LLM.
The fees in these universities vary from Rs. 5,000 per semester to 25,000 per semester. This article aims at providing you with all necessary information related to top universities other than NLUs offering LLM courses. Read on!
Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET) for LLM
Delhi University is one of the top universities in the country which offer LLM courses with world class educational facilities at very nominal fees.
Faculty of Law, Delhi University offers two types of LL.M programmes – two years’ LL.M and three years’ Master in Comparative Law (MCL) degree programmes. A 3-year LL.M is designed mainly to cater to the needs of working professionals as classes are held on weekends and there is no bar to practice law as an advocate alongside pursuing 3 year LL.M.
The admission to LL.M. course is made on the basis of merit in the LL.M entrance test conducted at pan India level. Total fees of LLM course is about Rs 15,000/- only.
Eligibility
Candidate must have completed his/her graduation in Law with minimum 50% marks for candidates belonging to General/PwD/NRI/PIO/OCI category and in case candidate belongs to Other Backward Classes/Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe then graduation in Law with minimum 45% marks is essential. Candidates in the final year of law can also apply.
Seats
In total there are 67 seats in the 2 year LLM course and 58 seats in the 3 year LLM course. So, in total there are 125 seats in total. Category wise distribution of seats is as follows –

Examination Pattern

- The paper consists of 100 objective type questions.
- 04 marks are given for every right answer and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. No marks will be deducted for any question which is not attempted.

Syllabus
The syllabus consists of the following subjects – Constitutional Law of India, Jurisprudence, Law of Contracts, Sale of Goods, Law of Torts, Consumer Protection, Criminal Law, Family Law, Public International Law, Intellectual Property Law, Cyber Law, Environment Law, Company Law and Partnership and questions relating to contemporary legal issues and landmark cases of above mentioned subjects.
Banaras Hindu University
Banaras Hindu University(BHU) is another leading university which offers LLM courses with world class educational facilities at very nominal fees.
BHU offers three types of LL.M programmes – For the purpose of admissions in three different kinds of LL.M. Banaras Hindu University conducts one Postgraduate Entrance Test (PET) during May / June every year.
Admissions are made according to merit of the PET subject to the choice given by candidates, and fulfilling the eligibility requirements and availability of seats in respective courses. Three kinds of LL.M. courses are as under:
- LL.M –Duration: 4 Semesters (2 Years) LL. M.(General) – 38 seats.
- LL.M (HRDE) –Duration: 4 Semesters (2 Years) – Minimum 05 and Maximum 15.
- LL.M –Duration: 2 Semesters (1 Year) – Minimum 10 and Maximum 20.
Eligibility
A candidate shall be eligible for appearing in the Post Graduate Entrance Test (PET) leading to admission to LL.M. (One Year) Degree Programme Semester I, if he or she has completed his/her graduation in Law with minimum 50% marks for candidates belonging to General/PwD/NRI/PIO/OCI category and in case candidate belongs to Other Backward Classes/Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe then graduation in Law with minimum 45% marks is essential. The applicant should not be more than 35 years of age on July 1st of the year of seeking admission.

- The paper consists of 100 objective type questions.

Syllabus–
There shall be one paper of 120 minutes duration carrying 450 marks containing 150 multiple-choice questions on Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, Law of Contracts, Law of Torts, Law of Crimes, Environmental Law, Public International Law, Indian Evidence Act, Hindu Law and Muslim Law.
Indian Law Institute (ILI)
Indian Law Institute(ILI) was founded in 1956 primarily with the objective of promoting and conducting legal research. It has made notable contributions in the legal arena. The Institute has achieved the place of a premier center of national & international legal research and studies, in which the lawyers from all branches of the profession, judges, government officials and academicians have been participating.
ILI offers admission to 39 candidates each academic year to its 1 year LLM course.
LLM courses from Indian Law Institute costs around 92,000 INR/Year.
Admission Procedure
Candidates seeking admission in LL.M program can apply online by visiting the official website of the Indian Law Institute on payment of INR 2500 for LL.M as application fee.
Selection for LL.M is done through the merit obtained in the National Level entrance exam conducted by ILI, i.e. ILI Common Admission Test (ILICAT). ILI CAT is a national level exam conducted for admission in LLM with centers only in Delhi.
Admission Test for LL.M is an objective type paper with maximum 140 marks for the duration of two and half hours. Final admission to LL.M program is granted by considering the following parameters:

Eligibility Criteria –
Passed LL.B. Degree (with not less than 50% marks) from any University recognized by Bar Council of India or an equivalent Law Degree from any Foreign country with Minimum 50% marks in aggregate.

Jamia Millia Islamia
The institute offers two years Regular and an Executive course in LLM program. The intake for both the programs is 30 seats each. LLM (Executive) is a part-time course offered on weekends to practising lawyers.
The minimum eligibility for LLM is that candidates must have passed the LLB program with minimum 50% marks from recognized universities. Admission to the course is done on the basis of an entrance examination followed by an interview.

Jamia Millia Islamia Entrance Exam for Master of Law 2021 or JMI Entrance Exam LL.M. 2021 is the entrance examination for admission to LL.M.
Educational Qualifications- The minimum Academic Qualifications for JMI Entrance Exam LL.M. 2021 required are LL.B. with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate or equivalent grade points.

LL.M CET
Department of Law, University of Mumbai offers LL.M of total duration of 2 years.
Eligibility
The minimum qualification for making an application for admission to the LL.M. degree course is a Second Class LL.B. degree obtained at the one or a degree recognized as equivalent thereto for general category. However, candidates belonging to reserved category make an application to the LL.M. Degree course with a Pass Class.
An application for admission to the LL.M. degree course must be made in the prescribed form and be submitted to the Department of Law within the prescribed time, immediately after the declaration of the results of the LL.B. degree examination of this University held in the first half of every year.
Admission forms for the LL.M. degree course shall be referred to the Committee composed of the Head of University Department of Law and the recognized Post-graduate teachers of the University.

Examination Pattern
There shall be Entrance Examination for all students seeking LL.M. admission in the Department. Total objective questions – 50. Each question is of 2 marks.
