The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPWD Act) advocates for and defends the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society, including but not limited to the following: education, social services, the law, the economy, culture, and politics. The Act was passed so that India may fulfill its commitments to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which was passed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006. In 2007, India became a signatory to the Convention. The signing States were required by the Convention to create new laws or change existing laws to remove impediments to the development and progress of individuals with disabilities. The purpose of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016 is to safeguard the civil liberties of individuals with disabilities and to end the widespread prejudice and ostracism they face because of their condition.
