About:
The Department of Commerce formulates, implements and monitors the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) which provides the basic framework of policy and strategy to be followed for promoting exports and trade. The Trade Policy is periodically reviewed to incorporate changes necessary to take care of emerging economic scenarios both the domestic and international economy. Besides, the Department is also entrusted with responsibilities relating to multilateral and bilateral commercial relations, special Economic Zones, state trading, export promotion and trade facilitation, and development and regulation of certain export oriented industries and commodities.
As India aims to become $5 trillion economy, trade and commerce is going to play important role in this growth. Further, India being one of the largest retail market, its export and import is going to increase substantially in coming years. Therefore, Department of Commerce has envisaged to achieve an ambitious target of US$1 trillion of trade in both Goods and Services, separately by 2030, which will be 300% growth from current trade value.
Further, India has already signed or going to sign a slew of Trade Agreements with various countries, which need to be implemented in next few years. Department of Commerce is also planning to undertake Trade Promotion activities to increase the trade in different commodities.
