About:
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It is composed of 15 judges, elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council. The Court has a twofold role: first, to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States; and, second, to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The Court is the only principal organ of the United Nations not serviced by the Secretariat. The Court has its own administration, the Registry, which provides judicial support to the Court and acts as a permanent administrative organ. The Registry is headed by a Registrar, elected by the Court. The incumbent is appointed by the Court upon the recommendation of the Registrar (Rules of Court, Art. 25).

Qualifications:
A first-level university degree in law and an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in public international law are required. A first-level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
A minimum of five years (seven years with a first level university degree) of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing, is required. A minimum of three years of experience in public international law is required. Experience within international courts and tribunals is desirable.
Responsibilities:
In furtherance of the Registry’s diplomatic, judicial and administrative functions, the incumbent provides high-level legal assistance to the Court, under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Legal Matters. In particular, the incumbent will perform the following duties: (1) Provide timely and accurate legal research, drafting and other support to the Court in relation to its judicial activity: (a) prepare case-related documents in accordance with the Court’s programme of work (including case-specific procedural Orders, procedural histories, summaries of the arguments of the parties, research notes, speeches of the President and summaries of decisions for publication on the website); (b) assist the work of Drafting Committees; and (c) ensure that all necessary case-related notifications are sent under Articles 34 and 63 of the Statute. (2) Provide other forms of legal assistance with a view to ensuring the general functioning of the Court: (a) attend judicial and administrative meetings of the Court, prepare official minutes for each session and carry out the necessary follow-up on the Court’s decisions; (b) draft administrative, diplomatic and general correspondence; (c) attend meetings and support the work of the Court’s Committees; (d) provide the Registrar with such legal research, advice and assistance as may be required; and (e) keep the General List up to date. (3) Provide legal assistance to and legal review of the work of other Departments and Divisions: (a) Department of Information: review case-related press releases; (b) Publishing Division: provide legal review and guidance with respect to various publications; (c) Linguistic Department: conduct parallel readings and review of case-related translations; and (d) Administrative and Personnel Division: assist with internal justice procedures, review procurement contracts and provide legal advice on various administrative and staff-related issues.
