About:
Project Nyaya Sewa is a legal action and intervention initiative dedicated to strengthening access to legal aid, promoting fair trial rights, and ensuring justice for undertrial prisoners and marginalised communities within the criminal justice system. The project seeks to bridge systemic gaps between law and lived realities, particularly for those who remain unheard and unrepresented.
The initiative operates at the intersection of legal research, policy advocacy, capacity building, and grassroots engagement, with a focused commitment to improving both access to justice and the quality of legal representation
Project Nyaya Fellowship Programme (‘the Programme’) is an opportunity for young lawyers and social workers to provide quality legal representation to undertrial prisoners.
The Programme mentors a group of young professionals to collaborate with the Madhya Pradesh State Legal Services Authority to ensure fair trials for undertrial prisoners at both the pre-trial and trial stages.
The Programme’s twin goals are to reduce the undertrial population in prisons and to strengthen the legal aid system in Madhya Pradesh. To this end, the programme includes both research and litigation components.
Role:
Coordinator-Prison Work -PW
Qualification:
- Graduate with an LL.B. degree or a 5-year LL.B. integrated course degree.
- Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Hindi and English will be given preference.
- Candidates with an LL.M. degree or a postgraduate degree in subjects related to the Programme will be preferred.
- Minimum of three years of experience working in programmes on criminal justice/legal aid support will be desirable.
- The above qualifications may be relaxed in exceptional circumstances.
Responsibilities:
The Coordinator will be responsible for the overall implementation and monitoring of the Programme in Bhopal. The engagement will be for three years, and the contract will be renewed annually. The renewal will be subject to satisfactory performance The Coordinator will work with the Programme Director and Deputy Directors to achieve the Programme’s objectives.
The following functions are indicative of the responsibilities involved:
A. Work towards the implementation of the Programme design and advancement of the overall objectives of the project.
B. Implement the public outreach frameworks to ensure that the aims of the programme are fulfilled.
C. Coordinate with relevant stakeholders including District and State Legal Service Authorities, members of the judiciary, prison authorities, lawyers, criminal law experts and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the programme.
D. Implement the review and assessment mechanisms required for the smooth functioning of the programme.
E. Ensure achievement of outcome and targets of the programme, monitor progress of work and suggest course correction as and when required.
F. Work with the team to discuss progress of the work and overall implementation strategy.
G. Responsible for administrative coordination between teams and ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day activities.
H. Coordinate with the Finance and Administrative team and supervise administrative and financial functions relating to the Programme, including procurements, contractual engagements and human resource management and ensure compliance of all activities within the framework applicable to the University.
I. Responsible for writing periodic reports, research reports and creating visibility of the programme, including writing and speaking commitments.
J. Coordinate with the Programme Director and Deputy Directors for update of work progress, periodic reviews, discussing implementation strategy and course correction as per programme needs.
K. Any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of the ‘Project Nyaya Sewa Fellowship’ programme
